LAFAYETTE, Ind. — With the start of the next school year approaching, local organizations are doing their part to help community members.

One of those local organizations is Legacy Sports Clubs, which will be hosting a school bash necessity items giveaway from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Legacy Sports Park in Building #1.

Traditionally, local groups give away backpacks filled with school supplies, but the leadership at Legacy wanted to help families address a need that isn’t normally talked about.

“I got a call about three or four years and my heart was broken. I was asked to choose a child at a school to help them and buy them socks and underwear,” Donte Wilburn, one of the owners of Legacy Sports Club, said.

“I didn’t understand why, so I asked them, ‘Why would we need to buy them socks and underwear?’ I’ll never forget when she told me that, when people hit rough times financially, the things that they can skimp on are socks and underwear because no one knows.”

The Legacy team will be giving away a bag with a set of underwear, socks, toothpaste, deodorant, body spray, face wash and other hygienic products.

In order to be eligible for the giving, kids must attend school between kindergarten and 12th grade.

The Legacy team has invited several barbers and beauticians to offer kids free hair cut before the start of the school year.

They will also be offering free hotdogs, popcorn and drinks as well as games and a bounce house for kids to play in.

Legacy Sports Club is located at 2920 Conservation Club Road in Lafayette.
